“Grapefruits are pretty.
My heart warmed when I heard this comment come over the cubicle at work. My co-worker was eating a midmorning snack and she continued…
“I mean, the pink… and the yellow… and the white. They are just really pretty.
This made me happy. I agreed and said that I was thrilled that she appreciated the aesthetics of what she was eating. I love when someone takes a second to recognize the beauty or deliciousness of food. Or of anything really.
She went on… “But you know what I wish I had?”
“What’s that? A camera?” (this is usually my first thought when I see beautiful food)
“No. A grapefruit spoon. They are so helpful. Like right now I have to cut each section, and then dig it out and then try to eat it. But if I had a grapefruit spoon it would be like a lot easier. Like, œWOW look what I did! Look at how big a piece I got. And then I could show it off to people.
I had forgotten about grapefruit spoons. What a marvelous invention. I had recently put a lot of thought into soup spoons but there is a wide range of spoonage that I had not given the proper thought to. And that got me thinking…. how many spoon varieties are there? Soup, grapefruit… what else is there?
The Final Dish: Not only are they pretty AND have a spoon made just for them but here are a few more grapefruit factoids:
1. Grapefruit forms a core part of the “grapefruit diet”, the theory being that the fruit’s low glycemic index is able to help the body’s metabolism burn fat.
2. Grapefruit peel oil is used in aromatherapy and it is historically known for its aromatic scent.
3. Grapefruit can have a number of interactions with drugs, often increasing the effective potency of compounds. This was only discovered after being responsible for a number of deaths due to overdosing on medication.

It’s about time someone featured an article on grapefruits, spoons and work gossip.

Too bad, this and many other wonderful fruits will not make it to our eagerly awaiting taste buds due to the freak winter weather conditions. And the avacado crop!!! I’m sorry to say (WCdish) has suffered the brunt of this frightful fruit fossilizing freeze. (an absolutely amazingly awesome alliteration!)

I heart avocados more than anything. Damn the schitzo winter gods for hurting any crops. However, they were on special last week at Wegman’s… so perhaps there is hope.

When I was young we had an orange tree and a grapefruit tree in our yard. Definately way better than any fruit bought at a store.

I think alot of fruits are pretty, but none are prettier than the grapefruit. I don’t understand why it is called a grapefruit though. Or maybe I should not understand why a grape is called a grape. Either way, they are nothing alike and yet they share the name….bizarre.

I love fruits but I have to say that my favorites, and in my opinion most beautiful, are only available in the summer. Peaches, berries, and melon. MMMM!
I mean you can get these during the winter but they’re very expensive and NOT very good.
When I was a little girl my mommy used to take me to Highland Orchards every June. In the morning we would pick strawberries and in the afternoon we would make lots of yummy preserves to enjoy the whole year through. We stopped for a long time and I don’t know why. But then we restarted the tradition this past summer. I forgot how fun it was! We had a very intense contest. Who can find the biggest berry!!

I heart you intern. Can I come this summer?
I’ll try to be cool in front of Mom.
