First and foremost, this article slash restaurant review is brought to you by the U.S. Government. Without them taking all of my money throughout the year, I would never get that fat tax return every spring . . . which means I was able to go all out and give my all for you, our favorite WC Dish readers!

According to a Craigslist.org ad, Butterfish is the new sister restaurant to current local favorite, Spence Cafe. With that in mind, I checked out Butterfish’s online menu - their dishes are similarly styled, but all selections are different from their sibling location. The prices are a little lower, as well - not significantly, but at least worth noting. I got a friend and a bottle of wine, called in a pick up order, and drove the ten blocks to grab what we were hoping to be the most delicious gourmet take-out order of our lives.

The restaurant felt warm and inviting, bigger on the inside than the small exterior let on. Half of the tables were full, and the clientele and servers seemed upscale. We were greeted warmly, and our food was ready to go immediately (maybe it was the fifteen minute stroll we took through the liquor store to pick out the perfect accompanying wine!). We had ordered an appetizer, an entree, and two sides to share, and our bill was only $45. We expected it to be more, but were pleasantly surprised. We drooled the entire way home, and ran inside to grab plates and a camera - we couldn’t let the meal go undocumented!

First, we opened the two shared sides, both $4. We decided to get something we knew we would like - the baked macaroni and three cheeses, and the roasted asparagus with asiago cheese. My tall, blonde friend dropped a jaw and I soon did the same when I opened the appetizer - Colorado style baby back Lamb ribs, with jicama slaw and sweet onion barbeque sauce ($10). We’d never had lamb, so we were going out on a limb there. For the entree, we decided we had to get the sauteed Hawaiian Butterfish, with a ginger beurre blanc and macadamia green apple salad ($24).

And dear God, it was great. Seriously. We made up plates full of food, sat down and the only sounds of conversation were satisfied groans and chewing. The food was tasty, nothing was over or undercooked, and for take out, it’s definitely quality. I recommend getting one item
off every section of the menu - it would make a great fancy picnic when it gets nice out. Next time, I definitely want to check out the restaurant itself - and try everything that we didn’t get already.

    I dined here last week and LOVE the smoked fish plate. I had never had smoked scallops or shrimp so I had to try them. I’m glad I gave them a taste but I fell head over heels for the smoked trout. Yumma!
    It’s a deal too… for only $15 you can try 3 kinds and it comes with all the fixins!

Although the old saying, "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all," is swell, we encourage constructive feedback (ie, be polite), and recommend backing-up your comments with evidence/witnesses.

We don't recommend complaining just for the sake of it (see number 1), but if you have a legitimate comment, it should be shared. Also, don't hesitate to disagree with other comments, even if your opinion is in the minority. If patrons aren't honest about their experiences, restaurants won't know that there is room for improvement. And there always is.

Be Specific. "The food was good" doesn't cut it.

Each dining experience is unique, so if a dining experience moves you in any way, by all means, share the details. Choose the sensory details that impacted your experience the most and describe them in your postings. Other foodies will gobble it up—literally.

Be Concise. 'Nuf said.

What? We thought it was pretty clear the first time.

Be Helpful. Sort of like how the elves and reindeer help Santa.

Will what you have to say improve the restaurant's ability to provide impeccable service and improve the dining experience for others (again, see number 1)? If so... help away.

Show a Little Pride. No Jane or John Does please.
