July 4th is just around the corner and, if you’re like me, you’ll be outside, grilling, enjoying a few drinks and hanging with your friends. Odds are that you’ll whip up some weiners and burgers. Now, I like burgers. In fact, I like ‘em a lot. You could do this and it would probably turn out great. But then again, you could also do steak. And that would turn out even better than great.

As a new cook, I find the toughest part of getting a good meal on the table is the timing. If things are going well, I am the good wife (ie, Mrs. Hyde) who happily prepares a meal for me and my husband. If things aren’t going well, out comes the cursing and yelling (ie, Dr. Jekyll).
As the week goes on, my cabinets empty — it’s a natural process. But, my pantry is never without a select few items. Check out the list below for some of my staples that create shortcuts and tricks to great meals — you never know what could become a staple in your pantry!
One of my favorite comfort foods, Arroz Cubano, makes a great mid-week meal after a long day at work. By the name, you would think it was a Cuban dish, but it’s actually a staple on the kitchen tables of most Spanish households.
