Main Line Today Magazine gave Star of India the Critics Award for Best Indian Restaurant in its 2006 Best of the Main Line Issue.

“Simple decor accented with Indian-themed prints and lyric music set the mood for exotic meals of savory, aromatic masalas, vindaloos, curries, paleks and biryani–typical northern Indian fare.

This is my favorite Indian place around. The only complaint is that the hours are always wrong. You have to call first to make sure they are open. The meal for 2 is great!

Although the atmosphere can be updated, the food is unbelievably delicious! I love Indian food but am very picky. My first experiences were in London and at friends houses and Star of Indian is just as tasty and authentic. Portions are generous and the service is good once the waitress warms up to you. I would highly recommend!!

I haven’t been here recently but I went last year and it was disappointing. Curry too watery, but the nan was okay. I lived in NYC for a long time and have eaten Indian in London so I know great Indian food and this place could be much better. There is a good, cheap Indian restaurant in the Gay Street Plaza which I think is better than Star of India and more consistant.

I agree with these reviews. I forget about this place because it is so unprepossessing, but every time I eat there, I realize there is someone back there who can cook. The vegetarians in the family love their food, too, and I love the tandoori meats.

Decor leaves much to be desired, staff wasn’t the friendliest at all. But I ordered the vegetarian navrattan curry, and the staff could have thrown bricks at me and I’d still go back for that stuff. DELISH. It’s just one of those places.

I think it’s a little expensive for my early-20s budget, but honestly, i never mind scraping together money to go there. favorite dishes - chicken tikka masala, chicken biryani, samosas. what i tried and didn’t love? lamb vindaloo - good, but not great.

i always order first, walk into town, grab a drink at kooma or jitters, and then foods ready. awesome.

So after eating almost everywhere in West Chester and becoming bored I realized there was The Star. I never really had Indian food but I’ll try anything. I’ve been back many times since. The food is great and very reasonably priced. Not very flashy, and it is BYOB but that works well for the type of food.

I wish they would update the front of the building by knocking out the front and make it look a little friendlier.

Review Guidelines
Be Respectful. Do you kiss your mother with that mouth?

Although the old saying, "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all," is swell, we encourage constructive feedback (ie, be polite), and recommend backing-up your comments with evidence/witnesses.

Be Honest. Look where it got Abe Lincoln. Well, before the evening at the theater.

We don't recommend complaining just for the sake of it (see number 1), but if you have a legitimate comment, it should be shared. Also, don't hesitate to disagree with other comments, even if your opinion is in the minority. If patrons aren't honest about their experiences, restaurants won't know that there is room for improvement. And there always is.

Be Specific. "The food was good" doesn't cut it.

Each dining experience is unique, so if a dining experience moves you in any way, by all means, share the details. Choose the sensory details that impacted your experience the most and describe them in your postings. Other foodies will gobble it up—literally.

Be Concise. 'Nuf said.

What? We thought it was pretty clear the first time.

Be Helpful. Sort of like how the elves and reindeer help Santa.

Will what you have to say improve the restaurant's ability to provide impeccable service and improve the dining experience for others (again, see number 1)? If so... help away.

Show a Little Pride. No Jane or John Does please.

If you are too embarrassed to put your name as the commenter, you probably should re-evaluate your comments (you know the drill... see number 1). If you have sensitive information that you feel needs to be passed along, please use your best judgment and e-mail it to us to avoid public posting. We don't want you to have any post-post regrets.

Don't Name Names. Let's not get too personal here.

We know you want to share your experiences, both good and bad, but this isn't the place to publicly condemn or praise individual people. Feel free to comment on "the service", "the chef", or "the staff", but any positive or negative mention of specific names will be moderated.
