Planning to go to a Super Bowl party? Here are some tips, from Margaret Moses, to keep you in line with that New Years’ Resolution to lose weight.
1. Eat well during the day.
Skipping meals during the day to save up for a party is a bad idea. You will get overly hungry and overeat. Eat a good breakfast and lunch, then go on to tip #2 below.
2. Eat a healthful meal before you go to the party.
Eating a healthful meal (low fat, high fiber), such as a baked potato with vegetarian chili and a salad, before going to a party is insurance that you won’t end up eating too much of the wrong things. You will be in better control when you see all those tempting appetizers and desserts!
3. Limit or avoid alcohol.
Alcohol is a double-edged sword if you are trying to watch your weight. It is high in calories AND it affects your judgment on choosing foods that are lower in calories
Here is a list of common beverages and the calories they contain:
| Beverage | Serving | Calories |
|---|---|---|
| Sparkling Water | 8 oz. | 0 |
| Wine | 4 oz. | 80 |
| Beer | 12 oz. | 146 |
| Nonalcoholic Beer | 12 oz. | 32 |
| Soda | 12 oz. | 157 |
The Final Dish:
I’m cool with everything except #3. I’ll have to work on that.

Bahhh….It’s the Super Bowl!!!! Isn’t there one day during the year when we can eat 73 hot wings, 1/2 bag of chips, an 8″ italian hoggie, & drink 12 beers without feeling guilty?
This lady should suggest that if you are going to eat so much crap on super bowl day, you should drink at least 6 shots and have a minimum of 7-10 beers so that you will most certainly get sick and puke up all the tasty goodies you consumed in the hours before.

I think a big thing missing is exercise. Everyone is so concerned about diets and while eating healthy and balanced meals is important, exercise plays an important role too. Cardio can help burn excess fat and calories while strength training will increase the number of calories you burn during the day. When you stay physically active you can splurge a little more on days like the Super Bowl and not have a serious effect on weight.

Don’t forget that eating is the only thing that foot-ball haters (like myself) have to do at those awful parties. And look at Janet Jackson’s boob.
Let’s also keep in mind that the majority of Super Bowl parties are organized by men, meaning your lucky to find anything but beer and perhaps an opened bag chips, usually propped sadly on a folding card table.

I don’t think anyone is disputing the advice, because moderation and healthy eating are definitely important, but rather the day in which to follow it. I agree with Jason, that it is more a lifestyle to follow throughout the year, in which exercise plays a big role. If you are concerned with overindulging, make it a lifestyle, so that you feel less guilty about splurging at a fun social event, like a Super Bowl party. And no matter how health conscious we all may be, who wants to gnaw on a celery stick when there are meat nachos and chips and dip to enjoy? We all have choices - we can only hope that we will make the right choice.

Thank you Sparky. Let’s all keep in mind that I asked our guest blogger to write about seasonal nutrition tips… and I think she did an fantastic job!
All in moderation… all in moderation.

I liked the tips. That is good advice. Like Sparky said, it’s just another piece of the puzzle. I know it’s a food website but I was just trying to convey that being physically fit is very important. My blood pressure and cholesterol levels are perfect and I think that is because of a combo of healthy eating and exercise. Again, good tips Margaret!

Yes, thanks for the great tips. Although, I feel that American nutritionists always take the high road in their view of food and people’s interaction with it. I’m sure a nutritionist would be down right disgusted at calories, fat, cholesterol, and meat that are a major part of the food in Italy and yet the Italians enjoy quality, not quantity, and I think that their health and food lifestyle/tradition reflects that. While caloric and fat content are important perhaps portion control and as Jason mentioned, lifestyle, might be the best way to approach “the big day” from the American food culture point of view.

I enjoyed the article Margaret. I realize that its important to snack throughout the day. While i am not on a diet I find that to maintain my weight I need portion control while that second and third helping is often tempting its not always the best thing. I exercise every week for a minimum of 6 hours and i find you need to be goal oriented. But when setting your goals you need to set realistic ones that are achievable or you will fail at them; and failure is very tough to handle. My moto is baby steps and the sky is the limit.
ps no one said who they want to win the big game??? In my heart i want the Giants but i realize they will need a Giant Miracle to win this game. Enjoy and continue to make good decisions.
